Suburban infill public housing for socially-connected single person households

The Cristaldi Avenue Social Housing development accommodates 9 single bedroom dwellings on a highly constrained, sloping site in Underwood. The design response deprioritises the car and organises dwellings along a leafy central garden spine.

Entry balconies, front doors and kitchens interface with this key space, providing residents with the ‘choice’ to engage with their community while also importantly allowing for private retreat. Built form responds sensitively to its suburban context, presenting domestic scale buildings to the site’s multiple street frontages.

The project utilises robust, low maintenance materials with the ground plane and shading devices designed to host productive landscape species. Cristaldi Avenue makes an important contribution to conversations around urban responsiveness and sustainability within Queensland’s housing portfolio.
