Supporting unique operational needs while facilitating increased collaborative care opportunities

The Head to Health Kids Nerang project is a 450m² interior fitout constructed in 2025. Developed in close collaboration with the user group, the design focuses on providing a supportive, calming, and functional space for younger children and their families experiencing mental health challenges.

The new facility provides fit for purpose service delivery spaces and staff workplace. Drawing inspiration from the local Gold Coast hinterland, the design reflects the tranquillity and richness of the Nerang River and the surrounding landscape, incorporating earthy tones and natural hues that evoke the calming presence of the river and its waterholes. The material and colour palette features soft greens and earth tones, capturing the natural beauty of the hinterland while introducing playful accents that are more suited to younger children.

The original space presented unique challenges, requiring thoughtful consideration in both design and spatial planning. Rather than seeing these limitations as obstacles, the design embraces the existing architecture and maximises the layout to create functional zones that flow seamlessly. The design continues the theme of fluidity, with curves inspired by the gentle meanders of the river and the natural forms of the hinterland lagoons and waterholes. These curvaceous forms flow through the space, creating a soothing and cohesive atmosphere that promotes calmness and exploration. Prioritising emotional well-being and safety, the design incorporates clear circulation paths, biophilic design elements, and playful features that balance functional and emotional needs.

The space is carefully designed to ensure a calming, welcoming, and non-overstimulating environment for young children, while also considering both staff workflows and the flexibility of spaces. Itis designed to be safe, inviting, and emotionally nurturing for young clients, families, and staff.
